The European Chemicals Policy

REACH is the European Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.

The European Community Regulation EC/1907/2006 entered into force on June 1, 2007. The main objectives of REACH are to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment. The legislation also promotes alternative methods to animal testing and aims to strengthen the innovativeness and competitiveness of the European chemical industry. Lonza fully supports these goals.

As a manufacturer or importer, Lonza is responsible for evaluating the use-specific risks from chemicals and providing the appropriate safety information to users. To ensure REACH compliance of all marketed products, Lonza is in close contact with its customers and suppliers.

To ensure ongoing compliance and continuity in business, Lonza has successfully registered all substances imported, manufactured and marketed in the European Union in the scope of REACH in a tiered process based on volume and substance properties by the last deadline on 31. May 2018.

REACH is an ongoing effort and did not finish on June 1, 2018:

  • New substances will still have to be registered
  • Existing registrations have to be updated (e.g. when reaching higher tonnage band)
  • Authorizations have to be requestedUses of downstream users have to be considered
  • New knowledge must be considered
  • Additional requests of the authorities dealt with.
